GET STARTED

I want a website, how do I start?

1. A domain

A domain is like an address for the Internet, it’s what people need to type in to their browsers to find your website. My domain name is www.enterprisedesign.co.uk.
A good domain name is essential because people can find you easily and identify you as a professional organisation. Enterprise Design can register your domain name for you and show you how to get the best from your domain.

2. A website

A website is a collection of files, including text and pictures which when looked at in a browser form a viewable screen. A professionally designed website can often be recognised by the quality of appearance, ease of use, and speed of loading. Enterprise Design works with your budget to produce a quality website, which is effective and does what you want it to do.

3. Hosting

Hosting is about where you store your website once it’s designed. Websites need to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to be effective. This means either leaving your computer on all the time, with obvious security and maintenance issues, or renting space on someone else’s special hosting computer called a server. Enterprise Design stores your website on reliable, fast servers which offer excellent service.

Now you understand the basics let’s look at more information;

A website is a way of reaching out to people, day or night, and educating, informing, supporting and entertaining them in a way that makes a favourable impression of you, your business or group.

Statistics prove that more and more people, are using the Internet, to buy products and services, to find out information, and to donate to worthy causes.

Before you start, lets consider three really important questions:

Why do I want a website?

Sometimes people recognise the need for a website but have no experience or idea of what a website can really do for them. You only get one chance to make a first impression. A poor website will mean that you are missing out on opportunities to sell your business or ideas, so invest in the best.
Now is a good time to think:

How do I go about planning my website?

I don’t even know where to start, what can I do?

I know what I want, but how can I get that on my website?

I’m in business, will a website mean weeks of extra work?

My charity group doesn’t have someone who can make a website, where can I get help?

Enterprise Design goes through a carefully designed planning process with you step by step to find out what’s right for you, your business or charity. We will meet with you, if you choose, and fully discuss how your website can do everything you want it to do, and perhaps a few things you didn’t know about. The importance of planning, knowing what your website can do for you, how it can raise your profile, or make money for you, is absolutely vital. A few hours planning can literally save you thousands of pounds, or make you a lot of money, and save you huge amounts of time.

Who do I want to read it?

Who your target audience will be, determines how your site should be constructed, the look and design of your site, and so much more. Every business or charity needs to really consider who buys from them now, and who they want to sell to in the future. Even if you have the best website in the world its useless if nobody looks at it.
So ask yourself:

How am I going to reach my audience?

Who are my customers right now, who could they be?

What will make people buy from me rather than my competitor?

Why would someone support my charity, or business, rather than another?

When my customers view my website what impression will they have of me?

Enterprise Design can create a site tailored to your audience, and with the knowledge and experience to ensure that your site gets the right promotion, we can show you how to get the best results from your website investment. We work with your budget, to produce the best quality design and development we can.

What’s my website about?

Quite often you see an advertisement and you think “What’s the point?”.  Websites can be the same. There must be a clear purpose to a website, and visitors need to quickly understand what it is.
Let’s think about:

Will people trust my website?

How can I make my point clear?

Do I want to make, or raise, lots of money?

Where will I find new customers or supporters?

How can I make sure my customers come back?

How easy can I make it for people to find what they need?

The content of your site, the graphics and particularly the text, need to tell your story, or sell your product, in a way that makes people want to work with you, or buy from you.

Enterprise Design ensures that your website has professional looking text and pictures appropriate to the purpose. Do you want people to buy from you? Do you want people to visit your premises? Then your website needs a clear invitation. Do you want people to support your cause or understand your viewpoint? Then your website must be persuasive and interesting.

We’ve looked at the basics, so let’s look now in more detail specifically at your interest.  You can do that by choosing “Business” or “Charity” from the menu to the left, or just click on the links below.

BUSINESS

Facing the challenge of a business website

Creating a business website is a challenge. Many of the customers I deal with are sole traders or small businesses. They don’t have a lot of spare time or endless supplies of cash. So the first question is:

Why do we need a business website?

Use of the Internet is constantly increasing, so the simple fact is, it pays to have a business website. The second annual Small Business Internet Survey was conducted by Gallup for online business directory site Superpages.com. Over 800 businesses with less than 50 employees were polled.

The survey found that 21 per cent of small businesses had established a website this year as a shop window, while only 13 per cent had set up a sales mechanism. This compared with eight and 13 per cent, respectively, in the previous year.

"Research indicates that many consumers use the internet to window shop - to research and browse before they buy from local merchants," said Patrick Marshall, group vice president of Superpages' parent company Verizon Information Services.

Online retail spending in the UK in 2006 grew by 33.4 per cent to a record £10.9bn, excluding spending on services such as flights, tickets and insurance and business expenditure. This is almost 13 times faster than the retail sector overall. The figures mean that over £1 of every extra £3 spent on retail in 2006 in the UK was claimed by an online retailer.

By 2011 the typical spend of an online shopper will grow to £1,056 a year, up from £606 last year. The 'clothing and footwear', 'DIY and gardening' and 'food and grocery' sectors are achieving the fastest growth.

Britons have spent more than £100bn online since 1995, according to online retail research group IMRG.

Online sales for April(2007) rose 55 per cent, the largest rise since December 2003 when Christmas shopping sent sales soaring. Travel is still the most popular category for online spending, accounting for £7bn of all spending last year, but sales of electrical goods, clothing and groceries are rising rapidly.

What this means is more sales, better turnover, more profit and more money. If your business is operating without a website and your competitors have one you will be losing out, and more so as time goes by.

Enterprise Design can help you with a really professional, quality website which will help establish you locally and much further afield, and put you in line to benefit from the advantages of having a presence on-line.

What are the real benefits?

Businesses who have a webpage and their own domain can make a real impression with customers.
A domain is like an address on the Internet. Some people have e-mails like “franksgarage@freenetads.com”  or “marysmithltd@cheepoweb.com”

What message do domain addresses like that send out to you?

Do you expect top quality? Can you trust these companies? Now what about “sales@elitemotors.co.uk” or “mary@deluxecurtains.co.uk”? These businesses might well be Franks Garage and Mary Smith Limited by another name, but don’t they sound so much more reliable and appear to be likely to provide a better product?

A website from Enterprise Design is able to project a favourable image of your company. Even if your premises is not as big or as expensive as your competitor people can’t tell that from your website. So a top quality, dependable image is just one benefit. Others include:

Cost effective advertising for goods and services, compare the cost of newspaper, magazine or TV advertising.

Show your products or services in the best light, and to a wide audience.

Lets customers browse on-line then buy on your premises or direct

Photographs can say far more than a telephone call or text advert.

Lets customers know where you are, with a map or directions.

Tells your business story, and your future plans.

Lets customers contact you immediately and you can find out more about their needs and interests from a webpage form.

Opens new markets unfamiliar with your service or product.

Provide customer support by answering their questions.

Enterprise Design provides a full and comprehensive range of services to ensure that all the areas of your website design and development works together to provide a professional, businesslike, and quality appearance everytime.

CHARITY

Faith, Hope and Charity

In my own experience of many years as a volunteer with various charities, I have found that there are some wonderful people working to make a real difference to life. Their faith in the cause they are supporting, be it people, groups, animals, buildings, or anything else, is truly remarkable. They work very long hours, often for little or no pay or recognition, because they have hope that what they do will further their cause and bring benefits to the organisation, cause or people they support.

However, getting help to share the burden is not easy, many charities rely on just a few people to keep things running. Funding and donations are more difficult to get, as more and more charities compete for a limited amount of money.

Is a website a necessity or an expensive luxury?

Why do we need a Charity website?

So much has changed in charity organisations in the last few years. The image of charity in the 21st century is one of sponsored skydives, bungee jumps, or walking the Great Wall of China. We think of Live Aid, Comic Relief, and Children in Need. But at the heart of the matter things are still the same.

Charity is still about people giving up something to help others. However, more than ever, modern technology presents new ways to achieve the aims of charity and interest groups.

A recent article in the Guardian looked at charities and the importance of the web to them, with 82% of respondents claiming that it was "vital" and 14% that it was "fairly important" to their work. This compares with figures of 70% and 23% three years ago.

In 2006 a report was compiled called Online Charity Benchmarks by iConcertina, a London-based new media agency with a focus on the charity sector. iConcertina's Dean Russell was interviewed and expressed these comments.

“I appreciate the time and resource limitations that charities face.  However, I passionately believe that charities will benefit immensely from having a website that fulfils the criteria we looked at in the report. I see no point in charities investing time & energy into a website if the online message is not aligned to the charity’s goals and purpose. This includes getting donations but also building awareness and making sure that if someone wants to support the cause they can easily do this from anywhere in the world by simply going online. This includes making sure supporters can continue to see the real-world benefits of the charity.  Just having a pretty website with no useful information doesn’t do this, nor does a site with copy that’s a year old or one that doesn’t allow donations online. A poor site is more likely to risk damaging a charity’s credibility and this is likely to impact on online donations, especially considering the web is increasingly used to support how and where we spend our money. As a society we are moving more and more towards using the web for online research and purchasing or donating. Therefore it’s important that the website be used as a tool to support the charity’s offline charitable efforts and enables stakeholders to engage with their cause.”
Dean talked to Chris Lake, editor, E-consultancy.

Enterprise Design makes having a charity website easy, accessible and within a budget which charities can afford. We have experience of working with a number of charities and so we know peoples needs are different. Why not contact us today and I’d be happy to answer all your questions.

 What are the real benefits?

Charities with a website from Enterprise Design benefit in many ways, not least of which is that people can check that you are who you say you are, what your charity number is, and what your work is all about and establish your credibility.  Funders can find a mine of information about your cause, much more than they can from the few words you can write on an application form. That may make the difference between you being funded, or the money going elsewhere.

We know how to:

Help raise awareness of your charity or interest group

Give a much wider access to your information, publications or research

Increase your opportunity to raise funds

Develop new ways to recruit supporters, members, or volunteers

Let a wider community see the work you are doing.

Provide support through e-mail, newsletters, blogs, or a forum

Save time and money on advertising, do it through your website

Enterprise Design provides a full and comprehensive range of services to ensure that all the areas of your website design and development works together to provide a professional, businesslike, and quality appearance everytime.

SOLUTIONS

Solutions for situations

In deciding what services to offer I tried to think “What do you need to have a really good quality website, which will represent a company or group to the best advantage?.” So, I offer what I do best, and for other skills I turn to professional freelancers who are tried and tested. This means Enterprise Design can offer a one-stop shop, my overheads are lower, and I can pass the savings on to you.

My skills are:

Website design and development

This starts by developing the look of your site from your ideas if you have them, or I can suggest options. It includes step by step development so that you are in control as your website grows. I am pleased to offer advice and help with writing your site’s text content and making it as user friendly as possible. My recommendations for graphics and style will be influenced by your desired audience, the image you want to portray, and the message you want to send out to people.

Graphic design and professional photography

Many years ago I entered a competition to design a logo...and won. Ever since then, and particularly during my time at college, I have become really interested in graphic design and branding. I enjoy creating graphic styles which will boost the image of your business. will make you more identifiable and distinctive. This is often in the form of a leaflet, brochure, poster or cards. Working in harmony with your website your paperwork can do much to publicise and promote your online presence, and adds to the consistent style, brand, and image that people expect to see from a professional organisation.

As a professional freelance photographer in the past I appreciate the value of excellent photographs on your website. I notice more and more sites where someone has scanned a photo of premises or a person out of a brochure and dropped that into the website. To get a quality result you need a quality starting point. I can take digital photographs at your premises or office to really enhance the look of your website. Or if people are important I can photograph them.

WEBSITES

Websites that work

A website that works for any business needs to meet the three A’s. They are:

Accessible

Accurate

Attuned

Accessible

If a site takes too long to load, has a confusing structure or navigation system, or contains reams of text, it is not accessible. Visitors will simply go somewhere else. As they do so, they take their business to a competitor instead of you. Legislation says that websites should be accessible to all, and so does common sense.

Accurate

People hate out of date, inaccurate websites, so make sure you think about how your website will be updated, and checked, right from the start.

Attuned

Don’t be a web bore, focus people on the message you want to give them, not on unnecessary information. Think about what your potential customer wants to know, and how best to present it.

Example Websites

The Healing & Harmony website was designed with colours and themes already used in company literature. Marion wanted a soothing, clean, comforting, feeling to the site. It includes minimal animation, check out the butterfly on the home page.
www.healingharmony.co.uk (Link to Healing & Harmony Website)

Sandhaven Harbour is a keen community project to restore the local harbour. It needed a way to make it’s presence felt in the world, and to give information to visitors and funders.

An easy to maintain news system was introduced this year to allow anyone to update the site. A donate button encourages visitors to contribute to the work.

Since income was a major issue we concentrated on promoting berthing at Sandhaven Harbour. Try typing “berthing Scotland” into Google to see how we did.
www.sandhavenharbour.org.uk (Link to Sandhaven Harbour Website)

Companions is a charity that trains volunteers to visit people with mental health problems. Flora wanted a website that was easy to understand, bright, cheerful and professional looking. To give Companions the quality look I created the logo and the colour scheme fits in with this.
www.companions.org.uk (Link to Companions website)

Craig from Grampian Community Watersports wanted a site to recruit new members to the club. We designed the new logo and themed everything to fit into an aquatic idea. The large Flash banner on the front page is an attractive way to add animation.
(This site not online at the moment)

LOGOS

If you want to get ahead...get a logo

Every big business or charity has a logo, it’s a mark of success. More importantly it helps to make your business, organisation, group or charity, different from the rest. Working with people I find they often have a clear idea of the type of image they want but no idea how to send that message to others. I try to fill that gap.

Example Logo’s

The logo for the Sandhaven & Pitullie Harbour Trust had a clear brief, which was  “...to bring together the aspects of a thriving marine economy with the local environment.” The anchor is an excellent symbol of boating and fishing, and Sandhaven Harbour is often on the route for passing dolphins, which gave the logo the environmental association. The gold and navy blue also adds a traditional nautical theme. That’s the story on this one folks. I remember it because it was my first.

SeaTiger Marine is a new technology company developing a wave attenuator to help combat the problems of global warming and extreme weather. The powerful image of the tiger is supported by three rings which represent the three circular elements of the wave attenuator.

Companions Befriending Scheme wanted a way of suggesting support and working together. One ellipse supports the other without intersecting implying togetherness but not competition or interference.

BROCHURES

Making it work together.

An organisation that is noteworthy and professional has an image. That image is seen right throughout its paperwork, premises, vehicles, and of course website. To make your image complete contact us about our print based design services. Enterprise Design offers good quality, cost effective ways to promote your business, charity or group within your budget.

PHOTOGRAPHY

A picture paints...

One of the major assets of a quality website is pictures. A good photograph can say more about the quality and professionalism of your business than paragraphs of text. People can see for themselves your work, your product, your premises, or your results. All the photographs on this page were taken by me. Using my photographic skills alongside my web designing abilities is a recipe for success.

PRESENTATIONS

If you want a presentation to reach your audience, whether that’s on screen or on paper, you’ve got to keep it interesting. So if you want to influence a prospective customer, buyer or funder, consider the benefits of a presentation from Enterprise Design. If you need Powerpoint, Ezedia, Flash, or display boards, come to us.
