Websites that work

A website that works for any business needs to meet the three A’s. They are:

  • Accessible
  • Accurate
  • Attuned

Accessible websites

If a site takes too long to load, has a confusing structure or navigation system, or contains reams of text, it is not accessible. Visitors will simply go somewhere else. As they do so, they take their business to a competitor instead of you. Legislation says that websites should be accessible to all, and so does common sense.

Accurate websites

People hate out of date, inaccurate websites, so make sure you think about how your website will be updated, and checked, right from the start.

Attuned websites

Don’t be a web bore, focus people on the message you want to give them, not on unnecessary information. Think about what your potential customer wants to know, and how best to present it.

This is the home page for Grampian Community Watersports. Their site is offline by request just now.

The Healing & Harmony website was designed with colours and themes already used in company literature. Marion wanted a soothing, clean, comforting feeling to the site. It includes minimal animation, check out the butterfly on the home page.

Sandhaven Harbour is a keen community project to restore the local harbour. It needed a way to make it’s presence felt in the world, and to give information to visitors and funders.

An easy to maintain news system was introduced this year to allow anyone to update the site. A donate button encourages visitors to contribute to the work.

Since income was a major issue we concentrated on promoting berthing at Sandhaven Harbour. Try typing “berthing Scotland” into Google to see how we did.

Companions is a charity that trains volunteers to visit people with mental health problems.

Flora wanted a website that was easy to understand, bright, cheerful and professional looking.

To give Companions the quality look, I created the logo and the colour scheme fits in with this.

Craig from Grampian Community Watersports wanted a site to recruit new members to the club.

We designed the new logo and themed everything to fit into an aquatic idea.

The large Flash banner on the front page is an attractive way to add animation.
